Dear Staff and Westmont High School Community,
I have had the pleasure of collaborating with Dayna Crawford and Craig Etheridge on an integrated technology Public Service Announcement project this semester. Our students were asked to work in small groups to plan and create an original PSA video, including filming original footage and editing clips to complete an industry standard, 30 second, PSA.
As we finish the project and reflect back on our students’ work, we would like to invite you to participate as community judges to select the BEST PSAs of 2010. Videos can be viewed on Vimeo at > http://vimeo.com/album/221582
If you are interested in participating, please read the following Q&A.
Q: What are the goals of the project?
A: Our goal was to utilize technology to engage students in the process of developing a critical understanding of health promotion and disease prevention and the ability to apply decision-making skills related to the protection and promotion of individual health. Our project will be assessed using a rubric that measures (a) competency in meeting national health standards and (b) the development of information literacy and technology skills in the context of personal health. In addition, students will complete a group and self assessment.
Your involvement will allow us to add an authentic assessment piece that emphasizes the real world contexts of the topics students have studied, i.e., their PSAs address real issues that they face in their community and they should thus be assessed on their ability to effectively communicate these issues in the same authentic context. Furthermore, adding an authentic assessment piece raises the stakes for our students and makes the assessment more valuable by holding them accountable to a wider contingency of viewers.
Q: What criteria should we use for judging?
A: Groups should be judged on their ability to incorporate the elements of a successful PSA, which are:
    · Students have written a PSA to a particular AUDIENCE and understand how to appeal to that group.
    · The PSA incites EMOTION in the viewer.
    · There is only ONE CORE MESSAGE.
    · THE PSA asks the viewer to TAKE ACTION!
    · The Format (humor, factual, testimonial, bandwagon) is APPROPRIATE for the topic and message.
    · The students used original photos or footage and took an original approach to communicating information and knowledge to others.
Q: How much time will this take?
A: There are approximately 30 videos. Each video should be 30 seconds. That comes out to a time investment of about 15 minutes plus voting time.
Q: When does the voting end?
A: Submit your votes by 11:00 p.m., Sunday, May 16th.
Q: Where can we view the videos?
A: Videos can be viewed on Vimeo at > http://vimeo.com/album/221582
Q: How do we submit our votes?
A: Staff please use the Survey Monkey to submit your vote via the following link > http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/69CKS7J.
Students you may also vote using Survey Monkey at >
    http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/75L8XYK
Q: How many groups will win?
A: We will have 8 winners, as follows:
    One Winner Per Class
    Period 1
    Period 2
    Period 3
    Period 6
    Period 7
    3 Overall Winners
